San Cristobal De La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, the former capital of Tenerife, is now a university town, and its entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic center is completely walkable: colorful colonial houses, inner courtyards, balconies, and narrow streets characterize it, making it very photogenic. The La Laguna Cathedral, the Convento de Santa Catalina, and the old noble palaces (e.g., Casa de los Capitanes) are all worth a quick visit. The city is full of cafes and bars, with a youthful atmosphere due to the university, lively in the evening but not overly touristy. A good plan is to spend half a day walking around the old town, stopping for a coffee or tapas, then going up to the viewpoints in the area or continuing on to hike in the Anaga Mountains. The climate is a little cooler and more humid than in the southern resort areas, so it's worth bringing a light sweater, especially in the evening.
